Scheduling the bikes that keep London moving

Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme is a 24 hour, 7 day a week, 365 day a year service and maintaining the network requires a dedicated team to keep the bikes and their docking stations in good repair, and to ensure that the supply of bikes meets the demand.

In anticipation of the 2012 Olympics, and the extension of the cycle hire scheme into East London – which would see docking stations increase to 570 across London and bike numbers increasing to 9,000 – Barclays Cycle Hire needed a way of optimising and dispatching field operatives to make sure that the supply of bikes to the right locations were accurately managed without increasing the size of the current team.

Working in partnership with Barclays Cycle Hire, Serco and TfL we:

  • Expanded the operation by 40% with minimal additional staff
  • Increased utilisation and productivity
  • Improved operational performance data
  • Improved effective scheduling, dispatch and recording of work
  • Reduction in call costs between field operatives and the control centre
