Why is the Anglian Water Enterprise Content Management (ECM) project a true IT Initiative of the Year winner?

With huge excitement, the joint Anglian Water and Leadent Solutions team await the decision, to be announced at the 2012 Utilities Awards dinner on 10th December. But why should the Anglian Water ECM project win the ‘IT Initiative of the Year’ award?

The answer, in my opinion, is quite simple. As a veteran of many complex, large scale IT programmes I would say the ECM project stands-out from the crowd because we:

  • Achieved exactly what the business asked us to do, on time
  • Provided the business with a new intranet, including a portal to a comprehensive document management system with a taxonomy and metadata, allowing people to find information quickly and easily
  • Got to grips with the unstructured data within the business, in support of the future evolution of the organisation – via the document control workflows, and significant volumes of cleansed data and documents
  • Took significant steps towards a single view of operational assets, supported by corporate portals into communications materials, data sets and maps

But far more importantly, and reflecting the difference in our approach, it’s not the ‘what’ but the ‘how’ this has been done that has been critical to success:

  • The programme has created a real team culture, amongst both the full time project members and the wider business. People want to be involved.
  • It has required a really close collaboration between a multitude of different organisations, cultures, timezones and characters.
  • We have taken the business with us. We’ve done it with the business, not to the business.

“The most impressive aspect of ECM has been the methodical, pragmatic and accommodating manner in which they have engaged with the business, in order to make the design and business migrations happen. A refreshing change.”

Win or lose the award this year, Anglian Water, Leadent Solutions, the system integrators and the solution vendors can be proud to have raised the bar on business and technology delivery.
